Meeting Description:

50th Annual Conference of the International Linguistic Association. Each year linguists from around the world gather to explore both a specific topic and issues from a range of linguistic fields. This conference will focus on Forensic Linguistics, with Roger W. Shuy and John M. Conley as plenary speakers. Abstracts are invited on various aspects of language and the law, including forensic linguistics, legal definitions and libel, courtroom discourse, translation and the law, misconceptions about language and the law, trademark language, the role of plagarism with respect to the law, linguistic change and legal policy planning, the implications of ''legalese'' vs. standard language in the courtroom, linguistics and common Roman Law. We also welcome proposals on other topics in theoretical and applied linguistics.

The abstract should be single-spaced and should not exceed 425 words.

Send the abstract, as an attachment, via e-mail to: woltjer@earthlink.net. 

Provide the following information in the body of the e-mail itself:

  • Title of the presentation
  • Address
  • Audio-visual equipment needed

Also, for editing and verification, send one hard copy of the abstract with the additional information on a separate sheet in a letter-sized envelope to:

Meeting Description: 

The theme of the conference is Language and the Law. Papers on the following topics are invited: forensic linguistics, linguistics and Common Roman Law, legal definitions and libel, courtroom discourse, translation and the law: courtroom interpreters, misconceptions about language and the law, trademark language in advertising, plagiarism, linguistic change and legal policy planning, the implications of 'legalese' vs. standard language in the courtroom. 

Papers on other topics in theoretical and applied linguistics are also welcome. 

The abstract should be single spaced and should not exceed 425 words; it should clearly state the research questions and/or problems addressed, and give some type of indication to resolve the issue at hand.
